How to Eat a Poem Like a Mango

In the foreground, my hand is holding a half-eaten Julie mango, with green banana plants in the background.

Mango season is upon us, so I’ve selected another of my poems from the archive.

What’s your favourite mango? Mine is the St. Julian aka “Julie”.

How to Eat a Poem Like a Mango

Sink your teeth
until the skin yields.
Tear, chew, spit it out.
Rip tender flesh.
Did you think this would be gentle?
Eat the body.
Drink the blood.
Suck until the heart is bone-white.
Lick your fingers.
Politeness doesn’t belong here.
Feel the red inside you rising again.
Did you think only one would satisfy?
